How do you photograph car damage for a repair estimate?

By Bromham's Bodyworks, Derby. Updated .

The short answer

Take four photos in daylight: one of the whole side of the car from a few steps back, one close up of the damage, one at a low angle so light runs across the panel and shows any dent, and one of the number plate. Send them by WhatsApp with a short note of what happened.

Why does the wide shot matter?

It shows which panels are damaged and how the damage sits on the car. Close ups alone can hide a crease that runs into the next panel.

How do I show the depth of a dent?

Stand at the front or back of the car and photograph along the panel. Reflections bend around a dent, which shows its size and depth.

What about scratches?

Take a close up with your finger next to the scratch for scale. If your fingernail catches in it, say so. That tells us it has gone through the clear coat.

Should I clean the car first?

A quick rinse helps. Dirt can hide fine scratches and make chips look worse than they are.

Where do I send the photos?

WhatsApp them to us with your name and registration, or use the estimate form on this site.
