Can a cracked bumper be repaired instead of replaced?
The short answer
Usually, yes. Most modern bumpers are plastic, and splits, cracks and broken mounting tabs can be repaired by plastic welding from behind, then filled, shaped and painted. A bumper may need replacing if large pieces are missing or the mounting points are destroyed.
How does plastic welding work?
The plastic either side of the crack is melted and fused, often with a filler rod of matching plastic, so the repaired area becomes part of the bumper. It is stronger than gluing over the crack.
Which parts can be welded?
Bumpers, bumper tabs and clips, headlamp mounting lugs, plastic radiator tanks and motorbike fairings are all commonly repaired this way.
When is a new bumper the better choice?
When large sections are missing, the plastic is shattered into many pieces, or parking sensor and safety system mounts cannot be repaired properly.
Is a repaired bumper cheaper?
Usually, because there is no new part to buy, and the old one stays out of landfill. We give you a written price for both options when it is close.
